About Common Admission Test (CAT)

The Common Admission Test (CAT) exam is an all-India entrance test performed by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for management programs and its 7 Business Schools (B-schools). CAT is a speed based test to evaluate essential abilities of candidates in various subjects. The test is of multiple-choice based with approximately one-fourth of negative-marking for wrong answers. It has mainly 3 sections which include subjects like arithmetical problem solving, data interpretation, English language skills, geometry, logical reasoning, puzzles and statistics. The exam held every year on the third Sunday of the month of November.

The CAT is the initial stage to get admission in the IIMs. After this test, in the January’s second week next year, the IIMs announce exam scores and make a list of eligible candidates for next stage of group discussions. The scores are comparative and calculated on percentile source for the total as well as the individual sections. Candidates who are called for next stage generally have total scores in excess of 99 percentile. The other important thing is that they also have balanced high scores in all individual sections.

Many other business schools in India, other than the IIMs, also accept the CAT scores for admission. Some of more well-known colleges which admit CAT scores to give admissions are:

About Common Admission Test (CAT)

Getting admission to one of the six IIM’s is not that easy. There are numerous challenges that are faced by the students who have to get admission in the IIM’s as well as in the other top b-schools.

Common Admission Test or CAT is one of the common entrance exams taken by the students who want admission in Indian Institute of Management at Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Bangalore and Ahemdabad. Besides the admission in IIMs, CAT also gives students the opportunity to get admission in some of the top b-schools such as MICA, S.P Jain Institute and others based on the percentile achieved in CAT entrance examination.

This entrance examination comprises of four sections that includes Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability as well as Problem Solving. There are multiple choice questions that have to be answered and for every correct answer one mark is allotted. Also there is negative marking in the competitive examination wherein for each wrong answer 1/4th of a mark is taken away.

This two hour test is the first step for the students who want to get admission to the IIM’s. After the declaration of the results, the short listed students are called for Group Discussion and personal interview. The scores of the entrance exam are comparative and the calculations are made on the percentile basis for the distinguished sections of examination as well as for the total.

CAT is one of the entrance tests that demands from the students the fundamental knowledge and also expertise in concepts. This exam is conducted once in a year on the second Sunday of December. It is essential for the candidate to be a graduate or the students appearing in their final year can also apply. Like other competitive tests, CAT has a focus on testing the basic qualities that are required by the managers which basically includes the passion to work hard, quick thinking power, smartness in availing the best alternate and most importantly determination or firmness.

CAT Exam Date

Every year Indian Institute of Management (IIM) will conducts Common Admission Test or CAT for admission to Management courses at IIMs.
Besides IIMs there are more than 120 Management Institutes which accept CAT score for admitting students. In 2009 more than 2 lakhs students appeared for the CAT Exam.

The testing window presently has been extended to make available students a wider range of dates. We will decrease the number of CAT centers percity to ascertain a lot better student-experience. We will lessen the number of centers simply because we are conducting CAT in more length of time,” said Soumitra Roy, MD, Prometric India when speaking with the press recently.

Common Admission Test is the largest MBA Entrance Exam in India. From 2009 onwards CAT Exam became Online. The test comprises 150 to 200 objective type questions and is usually divided into three to four sections.

Advertisement for the test aspected to be out by end of August 2010.

Why Online CAT Exam Failed?

All the students who want to persue MBA in Indian reputable institutions take up the Common Admission Test. Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) organizes this exam and based on the CAT results, they short list the candidates who are eligible and Candidates are called for Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Written examinations were held till this year but the 2010 CAT exam is to be conducted online.

Unfortunately the first attempt of conducting CAT exams in online failed due to virus attack.  Many students were stranded in many centers across India as the first CAT online test failed due to overloading.  But the IIM said that the test failed due to small technical glitches.  The IIM said that there was some problem because the window of the computer based CAT took ten days to be introduced.  2.41 lakh students took up the online test and they had an entirely new experience.  The major problem was that the students found problems only in the logging session.  Exam centers at Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Bhopal faced the logging in problems.

Students who took up the exams on the second day also faced the same problem and were unable to complete the test.  The IIM officials made assurance that the test for the students who missed out this session would be conducted soon.  Prometric and NIIT partnered together to make this CAT test but was not successful. Anyways-proper analysis and proper research would prevent such incidences in future.

‘CAT’ should follow ‘MAT’

Dr. Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Business School, a Chandigarh Based,  NON-IIM member of the CAT group has demanded that on the pattern of MAT, CAT should also be conducted in both the formats ‘paper-pencil’ as well as ‘online’.

It is to be mentioned that on the First day of the exam itself CAT become big flop show. Due to ‘overload’, a lot of centers have had to cancel the CAT exam. Even on the 2nd day of the test around 50 centers were closed for repair.

Though the failure was on the part of delivery of the exam from the main server but still Dr. Kataria feels that many students, especially from rural areas, fail to cope up with the online format. He also added that the penetration of the computers in semi-urban and rural area is yet not satisfactory. Students should have option to choose any format as per their convenience.

Kataria also said that students should not panic after server crash because IIM’s and prometric had done good arrangements for the first ever online CAT. But technical snag may arise anywhere and anytime.

It is to be mentioned that MAT conducted by All India Management Association (AIMA) is in the both paper-pencil format as well as online format.

What is the minimum score to clear CAT?

CAT FAQ

What is the minimum score to clear CAT?
This depends on the difficulty level of the paper and relative performance of others. Generally attempting around 60 per cent of the questions with around 80 per cent accuracy is good enough to get multiple IIM calls.

With a computer-based test, how should I do rough work/calculations?
The IIMs have stated that you will get writing pads with numbered pages on which you can do your calculations / rough-work. However, please do not tear off any part of the pad as you are expected to leave the pad and all sheets on the table before you leave. If you run out of paper, the invigilator will be happy to give you another pad.

What’s the CAT pattern?
CAT 2009 will have three sections and between 60–70 questions. But that is all that we know. For more clarity, we will have to wait for November 28.

What is the negative marking pattern this year?
The negative marking scheme last year was 1 mark per question (each question was worth 4 marks). The negative marking scheme for CAT 2009 is yet to be released.

Can I change my answer once I’ve made a choice?
Yes. You can change your answers as often as you like within the 2 hours and 15 minutes available to you. However, you can skip questions as well go back and forth between questions.

If I’ve marked an answer, can I deselect it?
There is no provision to deselect the answer choice or to skip a question after it has been attempted.

Give us some tips for CAT
Focus on the Concepts in Quant. For DI and Verbal practice, focus on the mock CAT and try to practice with as many questions as possible. Take one mock CAT a day and then analyse the paper for around 4–5 hours.

What documents do I need?
You need an Admit Card, Voucher, Photo ID card, and caste certificate in case you belong to SC/ST categories.

When will we get to know the score?
Only in the second week of January.

CAT website glitches to be rectified by September 18

CAT website glitches to be rectified by September 18

MBA aspirants are slowly getting accustomed to the practicality of the Common Admission Test (CAT) going online this year. Many who had registered online for the 2009 edition of the exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) were agitated last week after they could not call back the form when a mistake crept in and were asked to buy another form by shelling out Rs 1,400.

Following a TOI report last week pointing out the glitches in the online system, authorities are now adding features to the CAT registration and scheduling website to make it more user-friendly. Candidates will be able to make changes or correct errors in the forms from the evening of September18.

CAT chairman Sathish Deodhar said: “From September 18, students who have made mistakes while filling up the form can call back their forms any number of times and make necessary corrections.”

Said a B Com final-year student in a city college, Naresh G, “I had got my mailing address wrong. I realised it only later and was so upset that my parents got me a new voucher for Rs 1,400. I registered again under a new user name.”

There is good news for students like Naresh as well. They will be refunded the money they spent on the second voucher, but they will have to fill an online request form.

As the test can be taken any day from November 28 to December 7, many candidates across the country wanted to take the last slots. Robert Sekar, taking a second shot at CAT, said, “I picked the December 6 slot because I figured it would give me a few more days to prepare. Also, I will be able to get more inputs from my friends who are taking the test on earlier dates.”

Academics who have been following the test for long said that students should not worry about what slot they got. “Many students think the last few slots will have easier questions. There’s no logic behind such assumptions. The IIMs will prepare 20 different papers and each will have about the same difficulty level,” said Gautam Puri, vice-chairman, Career Launcher.

Meanwhile many students who had a go at the demo test papers on the site were also apprehensive about it. They said that though the interface allowed them to change the answer option it did not have an unmark’ option.

MBA aspirant Shrija Janus said, “The problem is that if we are unsure about the answer we cannot unmark’ it, so there’s the risk of scoring negative marks.” Others said that as the questions are not lined up on one screen and there was no ready reckoner, every time they had to look up a question they had to go back several screens.

Quantitative Aptitude : biggest challenge for CAT

Quantitative Aptitude : biggest challenge for CAT

The quantitative aptitude section is perhaps one area which represents the biggest challenge for students appearing for the CAT. If you need proof of this, all you need to do is consider the following facts about the CAT 2008 paper:

Fact #1 : With 0 marks (yes, zero), you would have scored 20 percentile in quants. In CAT 2008, of the approximately 2.75 lakh students who appeared for the exam, 55,000 students did not even make it to 20 percentile in the quants section, ie, they were not even able to ensure a positive score.

Fact #2 : On the other hand, if you scored 12 marks in the quants section in the paper, your score would shoot up to 65 percentile. This essentially means that the approximately 1.8 lakh CAT 2008 aspirants, who were unable to score 65 percentile or more, didn’t manage to notch up even 12 marks out of 100 in the quants section.

What is even more amazing is that every question carried four marks, which means that in order to score just 12 marks, you would only need to solve three questions. This in turn means that if you distributed your time equally across three sections, you would have 50 minutes to solve just three questions — a mind-boggling 16 to 17 minutes per question.

Fact #3 : If you were to count the number of questions that appeared from the chapters ‘Number systems’ and ‘Progressions’ (just two of the 18 or 20 chapters a CAT aspirant will cover, or as we are about to define below, one of the six blocks of chapters you have to study for the quants section of the CAT), hold your breath. There were 10 questions from these two chapters alone.

Moreover, this question distribution pattern is an open secret as far as the CAT preparation goes. Over the past 15 years, 40% of the marks in the CAT have comprised questions from the chapters on ‘Numbers’ and ‘Progressions’. Hence, everyone who took the CAT in 2008 should have been aware of this fact.

So why didn’t CAT 2008 aspirants manage to secure the necessary percentile in the quants section? Was there an aspect that was not apparent to them? What did students who prepared for CAT 2008 miss out on? This is hardly new for the CAT — students have always missed fairly obvious aspects during the test. If you were to look at some of the questions, which have been tested in the CAT quants section over the past decade, you would be forced to rethink whether the CAT really is as tough an exam as it’s made out to be.

Technical glitches in CAT registration

Technical glitches in CAT registration

With the registration for Common Admission Test (CAT) opening on Wednesday, candidates faced a lot of problems beginning with the CAT voucher and glitches in the registration process on the web.

Students alleged the voucher required for registration was of poor quality and even the slightest pressure was damaging it. “Even if we scratch gently, the code isn’t visible rendering it useless which means we have to buy another voucher spending Rs.1,400,” alleged K. Sandhya, an engineering student.

The technical glitches in the CAT website also gave students a harrowing time. According to Manek Daruvala, Director, T.I.M.E, a reputed training institute, received many calls on Wednesday with regard to problems in registration process.

Until Thursday evening, candidates were unsure whether they could correct errors in their application form. Following complaints from T.I.M.E and other students, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) rectified the problem and students were told that they could make changes in their form a week before the registration closed.

However, questions on whether the students who have already purchased another voucher would be refunded remain unanswered. “Yesterday, the website said that we can’t make changes and so I went ahead and bought another voucher,” said M. Krishna, another student.

With over 15,000 students appearing every year from the State itself, many wonder whether the eight centres located in and around Hyderabad would be sufficient. “On the first day itself, JNTU-Kukatpally centre reached its maximum limit.

If other centres too get their slots filled students may have to go to neighbouring cities, which is unfair,” says Mr. Daruwala.

The distance of the centres from the city too may pose a problem.

“We are expected to appear two hours before the exam and that means I have to start at 6 a.m. to reach my centre located 60 km from the city,”

points out S. Pavan, an aspirant.

Online CAT exam discriminatory

Online CAT exam discriminatory

NEW DELHI: Disabled people today raised objections to the decision making CAT exams for admission to IIMs online, alleging that the move was a “discrimination” against them.

“The decision is a huge discrimination towards the disabled people and the Centre must intervene,” Javed Abidi, Director of National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, said here.

He said they had sent letters to IIM authorities and also to the Ministry of Human Resource Development in this regard. “We are waiting for their reactions and we will take measures after that.

“Why IIMs have not allowed the use of screen reader, abacus, adaptive mouse and keyboards during the examinations. With these devices, the disabled people won’t have to depend on another person while giving the paper,” he said.

He claimed the biggest discrimination against these people is that they cannot choose the day, time and location of the test.
